Ellsworth Raymond Johnson, also known as Bumpy Johnson, was born to Margaret Moultrie and William Johnson on October 31, 1905. His birthplace is Charleston, South Carolina.

As an American, he spent his childhood and the rest of his life in America. He was 10 years old when Willie, his elder brother, was accused of killing a white man. 

At a time when racism for black people was at its peak, Johnson’s parents decided to move their children to Harlem for their safety. Johnson was a dropped student of high school.his nickname, bumpy, was given due to the little bump on his head.

After dropping out of high school, Johnson did not stop; in fact, he started working different illegal jobs and hanging around a bad crowd, which caused the attention of gangster William Bub Hewlett to land on him.

Johnson became a highly regarded bodyguard under Hewlett for handling illegal gamblers in Harlem.

As time passed, Johnson’s extracurricular activities, including burglary, pimping, and other illegal activities, landed him in prison for the next decade, where he spent almost half of his life at the age of 30 years. After he was released from prison in 1932, he was unemployed and was roaming on streets. 

In all this time, he was hired by the powerful Harlem crime boss Stephanie St. Clair, a.k.a. “Madam Queen,”. Bumpy and Madam Queen aimed to start a war against their rival,  Dutch Schultz, the mob boss of New York.

The war resulted in the murders of several kidnapers and more than 40 people. Eventually, the fight on their end was lost, which ended with a deal for Johnson. In 1952, Johnson’s activities were listed in the Jet celebrity people section.

In the same year, Johnson was sentenced to 15 years in prison for heroin trafficking charges. After Two years, Jet published in its crime section that Johnson was sentenced after losing a lawsuit. 

Johnson spent most of that time as inmate No. 1117 at Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay, California, and he was released in 1963 on bail. In all this time, Johnson was arrested more than 40 times and spent two years in prison on narcotics-related charges.

In December 1965, Johnson stayed in a police station, as he refused to leave. As a result of this act, Johnson was charged with “refusal to leave the police station” by a judge himself.

Personal Life

 In 1948, Johnson married Hatcher. Hatcher was born in 1914 in North Carolina, and later, she moved to New York in 1938, where she worked as a waitress on tables. Soon, she became a hostess. 

The couple dated each other for 3 months and instantly married each other. she even wrote a book about her husband titled, “Harlem Godfather: The Rap on My Husband, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson.”Hatcher died in 2009.
